Should You Wash New Sheets?
I recently worked at our Fine Linen store in Cincinnati and spoke with a customer buying a Tencel Lyocell sheet set for her daughter. She had asked me, while looking at the sheets, “how to wash them once she got home?” I’ve had this and similar question occur about a dozen times in the 9 years I’ve been in textiles (fabrics).
I am always suprised by how many people feel they need to wash new sheet sets. I always wash new plates, cups, utensils, as I eat from these – but I have never, ever washed new textiles (fabrics) bedding, or bath linens and towels. It is understandable that some fabrics are finished with a sizing substance that adds a starch-like stiffness that should be washed for more comfortable contact. But at DOWNLITE, fabrics are manufactured to be used immediately once purchased.
Because I work for a company that manufactures premier bedding, the thought of purposefully washing a sheet set created with an amazing finish, seems like moving backwards. I absolutely LOVE the feeling of new sheets! So washing a sheet set from DOWNLITE – is simply unecessary. And DOWNLITE sheets continue to wear perfectly well once it’s needed to wash, dry and fold them.
I can’t stop folks from this myth of washing new sheets before they’re used. If asked, I still suggest folks enjoy their sheets for one week – then wash them. For additional bedding care tips go to www.BeddingCare.com.
